Holiday Home, Lyme Regis

A mother and two children in a large kitchen with oak wood floors

Canyon Oak, Lyme Regis, Dorset

When Angela East and her family were house hunting for a holiday home on the South West Coast four years ago they were kept waiting outside a run-down property in Lyme Regis by the late arrival of the estate agent. The delay proved fruitful. Having secured the property, which they began to use as a holiday home immediately, Angela set about masterminding a contemporary two storey transformation to create their dream home by the sea, working closely with their main contractor Sugar Construction, a local Lyme Regis building firm.

"I wanted a real wood floor throughout the property and contacted Stewart at Blackheath Flooring, a local retailer who we had used before for our London home. We had V4’s Canyon Oak floor installed in our current London home some nine years ago and still love the way it looks. Even with two young children in the house the floor looks as good as new and its traditional oak finish hasn’t dated, so I decided to lay the exact same floor in the Lyme Regis property.”

The Alpine Collection Canyon Oak floor has a 4 mm European oak micro bevelled top layer which is sanded and then machine finished with a series of steel brushes which remove the soft grain, leaving a textured hardwood surface that is both wonderfully tactile and extremely hard wearing. To keep the natural aesthetic the surface is sealed with natural oil and the resulting floor is subtle yet robust, perfect for all environments. The floor was installed over underfloor heating, and a nice finishing touch is the window seats, made from the Alpine wood floor planks. The finished home now comprises five bedrooms; four en-suites, a games room, cinema room and study. And central to the home is a large open plan kitchen diner which leads out to a sunny patio where the miles of stunning coastal views can be enjoyed. The décor inside the house has been kept purposely neutral and minimalistic giving a light and spacious feel that doesn’t compete with the naturally stunning views that can be seen from all aspects of the home.

“We are looking forward to spending another summer in our holiday home, and plan for it to become the permanent family home once the children start secondary school. And we know the wood floor will last, look great and be easy to clean for years to come, even when we come back from sandy walks along the beach.”
