As the renovation was still ongoing, Craig was able to have input on the final finishes such as lighting, fitting and some of the kitchens’ specifications. Although the owner had done a great job designing the renovation, Craig knew he wanted a classic and rustic design, and so with the help of an interior designer – Liz from Wolfe Interiors –the design process began.

“Living in an Epson new build, everything was so clinical and all white, I wanted to go completely the other way, as much as it’s a new build and I love the modern clean look, I didn’t want it to feel like a new build on the inside, I wanted to give it a farmhouse feel, timeless, classic, earthy one, industrial in places with lots of wood, leather and block colours, without a great deal of tweaking, Liz, came up with the design.”

Originally, Craig had looked at solid parquet flooring, however, upon visiting his local V4 Approved Retailer he was advised to look at engineered flooring due to its cost-effectiveness and easier installation, Craig was recommended V4 Wood Flooring by Huscroft Flooring. V4 Engineered flooring has a thick solid oak top layer and is far more stable than solid oak flooring. Plus, it can be installed over underfloor heating systems and over large spaces without expansion breaks, so it was ideal for this space/

“I went visit the V4 showroom in Woking as I was still in Surrey, it was amazing, an incredible space. The staff were so helpful. I went for the natural tone, and I just took those samples back up to Yorkshire sat down with Huscroft Flooring, knocked up a quote”

The design featured a combination of three engineered oak floors, A103 Oak Rustic Brushed & Lacquered, A111 Oak Rustic Brushed & Lacquered and ZB109 Brushed & Lacquered Oak. Each of these floors is precision milled, crafted with a European Oak top layer, that has been milled with steel brushes to remove the soft grain and expose a wonderful textured oak surface. Whilst the simple lacquered finish allows for a natural and rustic design – which was perfect for the project’s brief as Liz, the interior designer, explains:

“The brief for the project was to create a homely feel to a newly built property. Craig was keen to ensure the look of his new home had a classic feel with quality finishes throughout. The oak flooring was used to add warmth and to work alongside the existing oak handrails and skirting boards, and the decision to use the herringbone pattern on the ground floor was to add some more texture and interest to the larger areas and hallway. We worked with a few pieces of furniture that Craig already owned from his previous property, but most of the furniture, artwork and accessories were chosen to fit in with the new property and ensured that Craig moved into a welcoming new home transformed from a completely blank canvas.”

A great feature of Craig’s new design is the matching stairs, creating a seamless flow from one floor to another, Craig explains:

“One of the things I was so pleased about with V4 Wood flooring was the matching stair nosings. I knew without a fact I always wanted to have wall to wall herringbone downstairs… I went with oak planks in the bedroom, but I was worried as I wanted to keep the flow of the wood throughout. I didn’t realise V4 did the treads, risers, and bullnose edgings, it was amazing to hear they did that match the parquet and the wooden floor colours. It was a no brainer to not have a runner on the stairs, I just wanted to do wood throughout”
