Kathy Rendall and her husband have lived in this 1930’s style house in Knaphill near Woking for almost 40 years. The kitchen was starting to feel dated so they decided it was time to give it an overhaul and create a more modern and practical space. Kathy explains, "We’ve been in the house a long time, and with no plans to move we decided it was time to upgrade the kitchen. We had a real oak style kitchen which was getting a bit dated, some of the cupboards were hard to reach and the layout generally lacked storage space. I liked the idea of a traditional cabinetry style kitchen with a contemporary edge. We started researching online and visiting local kitchen retailers and were then recommended DIY Kitchens. They are based in South Kirby, West Yorkshire but given the recommendation and the range of kitchens we saw on their website we decided it was worth the trip up to their northern showroom to choose our preferred kitchen first-hand." The couple chose Linwood shaker style wood units, finished in two contemporary grey tones – the wall units are Dove Grey and base units Charcoal Grey, finished off with an Ice Branco Quartz worktop supplied and fitted by Marble & Quartz of Sunbury. They instructed a local kitchen fitter ahead of the delivery to start planning the installation. The old kitchen had a stone tiled floor and as part of the renovation Kathy wanted to update these to a more natural real wood floor which would feel softer and warmer underfoot.

“We knew we wanted to finish the kitchen floors with an oak floor, it was just a question of finding the right one. I googled wood floors and V4 came up. They were just around the corner from us and their new V4 World showroom had literally just opened its doors so we headed over."

“The choice inside V4 World was fantastic and it was really helpful seeing large samples of the wood floors.  The showroom team were incredibly helpful and we narrowed down our choices and took away samples to help us make our final decision.”

The couple selected Deco Frozen Umber, a warm mid-tone engineered oak plank with a modern yet rustic grain. We had samples of the kitchen unit colours we had chosen and when we put these next to the Frozen Umber tones they worked together beautifully. The couple ordered the wood floors from Source Wood Flooring and their kitchen fitter agreed to install them. “We probably spent a total of 3-4 months planning the renovation, but once we had finalised the orders for the kitchen and wood floors they all arrived on time and our fitter completed the whole job in less than three weeks. We’re delighted with the updated kitchen space. Being a galley style kitchen we haven’t really altered the layout of the units much, however the modern styles and colour tones have really lifted the space and it feels much bigger and brighter now. Choosing a plank style of wood floor in place of the old square tiles has also made the room feel much wider.”

“We’re lucky that we benefit from a lovely southern aspect and when the sun streams in the oak grains and warm tones of the wood floors really come to life. We’re so pleased with the results and the floors have been great to live with. I look after my two young grandchildren regularly and they have been really durable when they are running in and out of the garden. I use a soft brush setting on my cordless Dyson to give them a regular vacuum and that’s really all they need.”

“The service from all of the companies we used, V4 World, Source Wood Floors, DIY Kitchens and our fitter really was excellent. We couldn’t have asked for more and now we can just enjoy our new kitchen space which feels modern, homely, light and spacious.
