Birthe Emmerich and her husband were looking to move from Woking into the Godalming area. Key to their search was to find somewhere that felt a little bit remote, in a peaceful location, detached and offering plenty of land.
Birthe explains, “We were open minded on whether that would be an older or newer style of house and when we saw this new build property on the market we were really excited to go and see it. Being brand new it had a fabulous modern specification, but as it had been designed as a country house style, with a conventional oak pegged frame, it also felt rustic and full of character.
“We loved it. It ticked all of our boxes and offered glorious countryside views and lots of surrounding land. We made an offer and were delighted to move in during the summer.”
Being a new build everything was finished immaculately and the only thing Birthe was keen to do was to replace the carpets that featured in some of the living spaces and throughout the stairs, upstairs landing and bedrooms.
“I’ve never really been a fan of carpet, especially having two cats, they just seem to mop up their fur and never feel really clean. We had V4 wood floors in our previous home and absolutely loved them so we knew we were happy to buy V4 again and got in touch with the same retailer we used before, Surrey Floors and Doors.
“They suggested we visit V4’s new design centre V4 World so we could see all of their latest wood floors in large scale format and decide which one we wanted to go for. We spent a lot of time considering our options. We’d had quite a dark oak floor in our previous house but felt for our new home something lighter would work better.
“It needed to blend with all of the exposed oak beams in the home, and I also wanted it to work naturally with the very light stone tiles we were keeping in the entrance hallway and kitchen, rather than have a stark contrast. Deco Nordic Beach was perfect. I loved the lighter tones of the planks and they offered a more muted effect, rather than a traditional golden oak colour.”
The Deco collection is created with a combination of traditional colouring techniques to deliver ultra-modern tones. The 4mm oak top layer is lightly brushed to form a relief of the natural grain and create a smooth surface.
A coat of wood lye is hand applied to further bleach the oak surface then layers of coloured oil are applied to create deep lustred boards with distinctive tones. Nordic Beach is treated to maintain subtle oak tones that appear washed over with white infused accents and grains.
Birthe placed the order with Surrey Floors and Doors who returned to complete the installation. The old carpets were removed, along with the skirting, before installing the wood floors over the underfloor heating system.
The stairs were also finished with the same wood floor planks and colour matched nosing completes the look smartly. With the skirting re-installed the home was finished.
“We love the floors, they look so amazing. The light tones are just perfect and the house feels bright and airy. They have also been really easy to maintain and keep clean, just like our previous V4 wood floors.”
“We’re loving life in our new home and now the carpet has been replaced with real wood floors we are ready to relax into our first autumn and winter here enjoying the wonderful setting.”
