A new kitchen design and Deco Midnight Mist wood floors creates social family space in Kent home

As Peter planned his retirement he also set about a project to reconfigure and update their kitchen and dining spaces, replacing the tired old kitchen and knocking through the separate dining area to create a large open plan kitchen/dining room all the family could enjoy.

“The dining room was hardly used, and when it was, being separate from the kitchen, it always felt like whoever was cooking was separated from everyone else. My wife and I were keen to transform it and my retirement was a catalyst in moving the project forward.”

Peter instructed a local builder and together they set about the job. Commencing in March this year the job was completed in just six weeks, including demolition of existing walls, installation of steels and the creation of a large sliding roof window above the new kitchen.

Peter and Maureen decided on a modern black and white kitchen, in complete contrast to the old wood kitchen they had used for years. Granite work tops and LED lighting controlled by smart phones added to the new modern design.

Next in the process was a decision about the new floor. “The old kitchen had pink coloured tiles. I never found the tiles practical, there was little forgiveness if you dropped anything on them, breaking the item or cracking the tile. The floor had to be dug up in parts for a building inspector to check if any underpinning of the house was required. Luckily it wasn’t, and we could make a start on new floor.

“We were both keen on wood flooring, and having selected a black and white kitchen, I felt a dark wood floor would be a perfect contrast. I popped into my local flooring shop, BR Flooring in Petts Wood, who had literally just taken delivery of samples of V4’s brand new Deco range. Explaining I was after a darker oak floor they showed me the Midnight Mist plank and I was absolutely sold. It looked perfect.”

Deco comprises six brand new colours, created with a combination of traditional colouring techniques to deliver soft, subtle and ultra modern toned engineered wood flooring.

The stylish finish is produced from a 4mm top layer of real oak, which is lightly brushed to release its natural grain. A coat of wood lye is then hand applied to lighten and softly bleach the oak surface. The result is a textured, yet smooth surface, to which layers of coloured oil are applied to create deep lustred boards, each with a distinctive tone and grain variation.

Midnight Mist delivers dark grey tones, merged with traditional oak hues for a contemporary, dark textured floor.

BR Flooring visited the project and measured up for the Deco wood floor to be installed throughout the open plan kitchen/dining space, plus the revamped utility and cloakroom.

“BR Flooring were tremendous. They were spot on with their survey, advised us on best trims to use and completed the fitting over a new ply sub floor and underlay with no problems.

“The finished space is fantastic to live with, the floor looks immaculate and we love the different LED light affects against the dark wood tones. Getting everyone involved my son picked out the bar stools and my daughter the new dining table. It is now the ideal family space to entertain and enjoy time with our children and grand children.

“The floor is so hardwearing so there is absolutely no problem with the volume of traffic it gets and cleaning it is a breeze. We’re using the recommended Wood’s Good Natural Floor care which is quick and simple to.

“I’ve worked hard all my life and now have a beautiful home to enjoy my retirement and my family.  The new space is so much more social, it makes such a difference. Testament to how good the floor looks is from my brother, typically a critic he simply said ‘wow’ when he first visited the finished home. Words I don’t hear from him very often!”
