Tracey and her family moved into their home 2 years ago, and although it was a new build that they loved, they knew they needed to add their own personality to the design. The home was light and spacious, not completely open plan, which Tracey notes “is great for noise and privacy with two teenage sons”. In addition, the house was complete with sash windows, layered covings and high ceilings and whilst these aspects brought plenty of character to each room, the interiors were not quite to their taste. The family soon embarked on a redecoration to make it their own.
When they first moved in, all the walls were complete with a cream-coloured paint. Whilst this can open any space, it did not reflect the family’s personality. Struggling with the lack of colour, Tracey arranged for a Farrow & Ball Colour Consultation for some expert advice on injecting colour into their living space. In addition, the family drew on their own tastes, and the advice of friends to create a design that felt like home, Tracey explains:
“Nicky from Farrow & Ball was great, and she based the paint colours on swatches of our new sofas, existing furniture, light, space and which moods we wanted to create. I also have a friend who is an artist and she helped with soft furnishing ideas, and I worked closely with my youngest son who has a creative flair. We used Pinterest and Instagram to give us design ideas and our main goal was to add colour and personal touches to make it feel like our home.”
When it came to the flooring, Tracey and the family were searching for wood floors that would work with their new paint colours, and knew that muted grey earthy tones, rather than golden tones would be the way to go. To that end, they chose V4’s Frozen Umber herringbone, from the Deco Parquet collection. Complete with a brushed and colour oiled surface, Frozen Umber offers neutral earthy tones that complement Tracey’s design brilliantly, whilst offering a durable wear layer perfect for busy families. Tracey comments: “The Frozen Umber is just perfect as it is very muted with grey and earthy tones and ties in with our walls and furniture perfectly”.
Tracey and her son visited the V4 Surrey Design Centre in Horsell, where they were greeted by one of our showroom hosts, who guided the family through our extensive engineered wood flooring collection. In addition to large samples of each floor, perfect for helping you decide the perfect floor for your design, you can also find a vast selection of Farrow and Ball samples at the Design Centre.
V4 have a great relationship with the luxury paint company, supporting our local Farrow and Ball showrooms, including Sunningdale and Guildford. The Farrow and Ball paint swatches at V4 are the perfect tool to help find your dream match when it comes to your floors and walls. What’s more, you can even find V4 samples at F&B showrooms local to us. When discussing their visit to the V4 Surrey Design Centre, Tracey notes “The staff were wonderful and so helpful and patient. They had the Farrow & Ball paint colour brochure and helped us figure out the best match.”
“The herringbone is beautiful and full of character but also contemporary. It changes with the light and no two pieces of wood are identical. So, as well as fitting the ‘grey and earthy tone’ bill, it ties in with some of our lighter wood furnishings in the kitchen and dining room and the bamboo lights and footstools in the living room. I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of it as it is so pretty, and it adds so much warmth and depth to our living spaces.”
Making their new house feel like a family home didn’t stop at there, Tracey and her family carefully selected different materials to extend their love of nature throughout their home and reflect on their travels, experiences, and personalities. With the olive Bagsie Sofa from Loaf bringing out the natured-inspired tones of Farrow and Ball’s Hardwick White paint, the living room really felt like an extension of their garden. She describes: “As the living room has French doors which open out onto a south-facing garden, I wanted it to feel full of nature, like an extension of the garden. I’ve tried to reflect our travels to Spain, Africa and India with the natural bamboo, olive green sofas and orange tree. The muted earthy tones of our flooring complement this natural theme perfectly.”
Often described as the heart of the home, the Shepheard’s family kitchen is no exception to the beautiful and well-thought-out designs. With an elegant blue paint on the walls (Farrow and Ball’s De Nimes) perfectly contrasting the natural tones of the Neptune Arundel dining table, the end result is a contemporary design complete with a muted warmth. Tracey explains: “for the kitchen we wanted blue, green and grey tones to reflect the ocean as I am a swimmer. I love how the new darker flooring contrasts with the lighter feel of the walls and furniture but still blends in because of its many beautiful shades. It adds warmth and depth without compromising on the feeling of light and space.”
When asked if the flooring has lived up to her expectation, Tracey concluded:
“The new flooring has changed the whole feel of the house and it feels like our home now. The angles of the herringbone and its multiple shades are so beautiful and interesting, and we get so many compliments on it. I recommend the Bona mop and oiled wood flooring spray for easy cleaning. Thank you V4, you have exceeded our expectations!”.
