When the flat’s owner, Chris Brown, was looking to modernise his flat he wanted to create contemporary styling, but also embrace a little retro edge in keeping with the original build era.
“I’d decided on a wood floor and had been looking at traditional plank styles. However on a visit to my local floor retailer, Blackheath Flooring, I was introduced to a new wood block style that had just been introduced into the V4 range.”
“I knew this style would be ideal for the project. It’s completely on trend at the moment, which met my aspiration to modernise my flat, but also have that retro connection to the parquet floors that were so popular in mid-century design.”

The blocks offer a myriad of looks both in terms of layout and finish. Grooved on three sides, with a tongue on one, they can be installed in any formation; side by side, basket weaved, staggered or herringbone style, which is the layout Chris opted for using Prime Grade blocks.
Completely versatile, once installed using a solvent free adhesive, the blocks are sanded, filled and sealed with oil or lacquer to any desired colour and finish.
“I’m extremely delighted with the results. The Herringbone layout looks fabulous and makes my flat look and feel very spacious. I wanted to retain the natural colour and look of the real oak blocks so my floor was finished with just a simple natural lacquer. The floor provides a classic style that is easy to maintain and looks great.”
