A103 Oak Rustic Brushed & Lacquered

Located in Jersey’s capital, St Helier, St James Sports Bar is a popular venue with locals and tourists alike. Having built a reputation for great food and drink and regular entertainment including live music the owners were devastated when a large leak caused major water damage affecting the existing wood floors and carpet that ran throughout the bar. Salvaging the floors was not an option so with the urgent need to specify new floors they contacted their local flooring experts, Jersey Flooring. Centrally located in Jersey owner Gary was happy to help them find the ideal new floors for the bar.

“When they got in touch they were naturally upset about the damage that had been caused, but accepting new floors would be required they were keen to install a high quality wood floor finish throughout the bar and restaurant spaces and trusted us to make recommendations.”

“I visited the venue to get a feel for the space. The bar has maintained quite a traditional style and the owners were keen for a classic style of wood floor that would feel new and modern but still in keeping with the bars décor. We’ve worked with V4 wood floors on both residential and commercial spaces in the past and they have always stood up really well to the high footfall and demands of hospitality venues. Knowing the more classic oak style the owners were looking for Gary was quick to recommend a floor from the long-running Alpine Collection. The collection features a menu of surface finishes and given the demands of the footfall on the surface Gary knew a lacquered surface would be best equipped for the job. Alpine Oak Rustic Brushed and Lacquered wood floors were selected. Mirroring the proportions of a traditional floor board this plank is ideal in both domestic and commercial interiors. The rustic oak surface is lightly brushed to remove the soft grain, leaving a hard wearing and tactile hardwood surface. 6 coats of aluminium oxide matt lacquer protect the surface whilst maintaining the natural oak tone. The resulting floor is easy to maintain and extremely resistant to everyday wear and scratching. A generous 4mm oak top surface also means the floors can be easily sanded and re-treated in years to come.

“I know from past experience how robust these floors are whilst still conveying a very natural feel full of rustic oak texture and grains. They would look great against the darker wood cladding inside the bar.”

The bar owners agreed and were impressed with the high quality and overall look and size of the planks, confident the floors would make a lovely feature inside the bar. 150m2 of wood flooring was to be installed inside the space. To ensure a strong sub floor following the water damage the team applied two coats of liquid DPM throughout followed by two coats of Tilemaster Level Flex cement smooth compound, finished with F Ball B95 adhesive to bond the floor. Sub floors perfect the impact of Covid-19 meant that while the bar was closed Gary had a limited team. We had two guys happy to work but it did mean the job took a lot longer than it usually would. However, from start to finish including all the preparation the floors were completed in just under four weeks. The finished wood floors have really opened up the bar, lightening the spaces. The floors feel fresh and modern but maintain a traditional edge so they naturally sit against the existing décor. Where the floors were previously a mix of carpet and wood having the same floor finish now run seamlessly throughout the different areas of the bar creates a more modern feel and natural flow.

“My clients were over the moon with the finished results. It had been a testing time what with the water damage and then Covid-19 lockdown but the bar is now ready to go with wood floors that not only look great but are extremely durable as customers return to the bar. They have really transformed the whole space.”
