Axbridge in Somerset is home to our latest featured install. A charming village with a history spanning over a 1000 years, many of its buildings are listed. The delightful market town sits at the foot of the beautiful Mendip Hills, near to Cheddar, with a character all of its own.
Once part of a Saxon defence system against the Viking invaders, its history goes back to King Alfred’s time. The medieval square has half-timbered buildings, a handsome church, numerous specialist shops, restaurants and cafes. Also in the centre is King John’s Hunting Lodge, an early Tudor merchant’s house that has been restored as a museum.
Tucked away in a quaint street the owners of a Grade II listed two-story house, constructed in the late 18th Century, were looking to undertake a complete upgrade project.
Nigel and Cressida Humphries moved to Arundel House in November 2014, and like most new homeowners wanted to put their own stamp on the house.
The property already had slate floors to some of the rooms which they were keeping, so they were looking for a wood floor that would work alongside this but also be authentic to the buildings era and charm.
Wood flooring was being installed in a bedroom, the cosy snug and the lounge, covering approximately 50m2. Having visited their local flooring specialist Adam Cahill Carpet and Flooring they browsed the V4 Woodflooring collection first hand and opted for Urban Nature Oak Rustic Foundry Steel, hand finished, stained and UV oiled.
“We had heard from friends and also our decorator of Adam Cahill Carpet & Flooring specialists. They have proved to be a valuable source of information and inspiration in this small ongoing project with their friendly, professional and, most importantly reliable service.”
“We chose V4 Woodflooring Urban Nature Oak Rustic as the rich texture of this stained oak floor produces a contemporary yet authentic finish, ideal to upgrade the property but maintain a natural feel, and the darker tones of the wood sit perfectly with the rest of our home.”
The unique base coats on this floor are designed to produce an unfinished appearance, lightly brushed to remove soft grain and then multi-coated with durable matt lacquer which contains metal additives, designed to enhance the wear performance of the surface. The final appearance is matt, matching the slate.
“We love the easy maintenance, cleanliness and stylishness of this modern material that seems to fit so well in our new home. The thickness of the real oak top layer of V4’s floors was also an important factor in our choice and this provides longevity as we can refurbish the boards numerous times.”
The selected wood floor creates the perfect base from which the couple’s interior design dressings keep wooden charm alive with a contemporary twist, and it blends beautifully with the ceilings traditional beams and an iron staircase.
Zoe from Adam Cahill Carpet and Flooring enjoyed this project,
“It was lovely to work on a listed building and see the transformation take place. The owners have created lovely interior design touches whilst maintaining the features and heritage of the property. Being an old property there were a few challenges to installing the wood floors as walls were not flush, but with skilled installation it wasn’t a problem to overcome and the finished results are lovely.”
