Having moved into The Croft in Blakeshall over five years ago, a renovation of the ground floor space to create open plan living was always planned. The family’s aspiration was to maintain a rustic, country feel but with modern benefits. The plan was to completely gut the downstairs living area, knock through walls to open up the space and extend the back of the property to include integrated bi – fold doors, where the indoors would meet the outdoors seamlessly.
The house had solid oak floors throughout when the Thompson’s moved in which they loved, however they were looking to install underfloor heating throughout which wouldn’t work with the existing floor. Looking for inspiration for their extension project, they visited the Grand Designs Live in 2013. Here they met V4 Woodflooring and were introduced to a new range of wood floors coming soon from V4, Urban Nature.
“The design inspiration for the project was a period country feel with modern benefits – Urban Nature was the perfect floor to achieve this. We loved the natural rustic and weathered aesthetic of the range, along with the floors ability to work perfectly with underfloor heating. So much so, we decided to delay extension until the floor became available in 2014 and started work on the project in March last year.”
The Thompson’s selected UN103 Oak Rustic Weathered Beam, Hand Finished, Stained & Hardwax Oiled. The surface of this board is given various treatments including distressing and hand scraping with traditional tools, the timber is selected for its character filled knots and natural blemishes which are filled and then sanded individually to leave open knots and holes which give the appearance of an aged and weathered plank. The Weathered Beam top layer is given the appearance of an aged, fumed board with the application of several different WOCA colour hardwax oils which are able to coat the deep embossed grain.
With the wood floor complete, the family have gone on to add their own interior design touches that maintain the design theme perfectly. A traditional look wood burner, brick facing walls, natural yet modern furnishings and a superior bespoke 1909 kitchen which creates a perfect period meets contemporary style kitchen to finish the look.
“We are so pleased with the finished results, it really feels like home now, with a fabulous new living space which has become the heart of our home. We love the rustic effect that the floor has given us and are equally pleased that is easy to clean and maintain, and King the family Dalmatian loves nothing more than snoozing on the warm underfloor heated wood floor.”
