Zigzag Urban Sunset delivers herringbone style and a host of other benefits in Birmingham home

Zed Ali and his family moved from countryside living to return to city life in this three bedroom 1930’s semi, situated in south Birmingham.

Their previous home had a hard tiled floor and they had got used to the benefits of an easy to clean surface, especially with two dogs in tow, so were keen to upgrade the tired carpets in the Birmingham property to a hard surface.

Zed explained, “We definitely had wood floors in mind and I had noticed a resurgence in parquet floors which I thought could work well with the interior style and layout of the house. A friend had recently installed solid wood block parquet floors, and while they looked fantastic the cost, installation process and long term maintenance requirements were a bit off putting for us.”

Zed visited local wood flooring retailer, Happy Feet Floors in Birmingham. On discussing his key requirements and assuming he had to rule out a parquet floor he was pointed in the direction of the new Zigzag herringbone collection from V4.

“Happy Feet Floors explained the benefits of this new type of herringbone wood block flooring. As the blocks are engineered and have a tongue and groove profile it would be just like having an engineered plank wood floor installed, so we’d get all the benefits of that type of wood floor along with the modern parquet style we wanted.”

Zigzag floors deliver ultra stable precision engineered wood blocks, which overcome some of the installation difficulties of solid oak blocks. The 4 mm oak top layer is bonded to a hardwood ply base which makes it suitable for use with any flat subfloor and underfloor heating, as well as being a much more environmentally friendly choice than solid oak blocks.

The tongue and groove installation method is akin to wood floor planks. The floors can be fully bonded with fast curing solvent free adhesive, so the installation of a parquet floor in a striking herringbone pattern becomes quick and easy without compromising on style or authenticity.

Deciding to go ahead, Zed selected Urban Sunset from the six contemporary colours available in the Zigzag collection.

“When we started decorating this house we knocked out a stud wall around the fire place to discover the original brick surround. We decided to make a feature of this and install a new log burner so were keen to create a colour scheme that would work with the brick and Urban Sunset was a lovely match.”

Zigzag Urban Sunset has been installed throughout the entrance hallway, lounge and dining spaces of the home. Happy Feet Floors completed the installation which included a screed to the rear of the house to provide a level floor so the herringbone floors run seamlessly throughout the living spaces, meeting a neat transition to the ceramic tiles in the kitchen.

“We are delighted with the floors. As well as delivering on the modern parquet style we wanted, they have been so practical in terms of installation, cost and keeping them clean.

“I’ve suffered from breathing difficulties following health issues last year and since we’ve had the floors it has definitely improved as our dogs fur is easily spotted and cleaned with a quick sweep – so much more hygienic than the old carpets.

“We are always thrilled to receive the many compliments we get about the new floors from friends and family who come over, and the whole process from visiting our approved V4 retailer to the installation being completed couldn’t have been more straightforward.”
