Lacquered Wood Floor Care Introduction

Lacquer is the perfect way to seal and reseal hardwood flooring, giving a beautiful lustre to the surface whilst providing a water based and durable coating that lasts.

Our lacquered wood floors are finished with up to eight coats of hard wearing and easy maintenance lacquer which creates a hard wearing stain and water resistant surface that is ideal for a busy family home.

Care Advice

Prevent accumulation of grit and abrasive dust which can scratch and dull the lacquered surface. Do this with regular sweeping and vacuum cleaning and by installing barrier mats such as coir matting inside and outside all external doorways.

Protect all furniture with felt pads to avoid any scratching with movement.

Wipe up any spilled liquids and avoid any standing water or liquid as wood will absorb liquid and expand which could affect the stability of the floor.

Any stains should be removed while wet with a clean damp cloth.

Avoid use of oil-based detergent or any household cleaners. These can be abrasive and damage or dull the surface and can leave a dangerous slippery film.

If using a mop and bucket with soap solution to clean the floor, avoid using too much water insuring the mop almost dry before application.

Cleaning Schedule

Daily Cleaning

  • Sweep and clear dust and debris with a soft bristle brush.
  • Vacuum with a parquet/ hard floor setting to avoid scratching.
  • Wipe up liquid spills as they occur when possible.

Weekly Cleaning

  • Damp clean with a suitable spray cleaner. A pH neutral / balanced cleaning solution.
  • Use a spray mop with a pH balanced soap solution to avoid soaking your floor. Mechanical, Robot cleaners are fine if they can accommodate wood floors.
  • Do not use steam cleaners which will damage wood flooring.
  • Avoid supermarket floor cleaning brands as they tend to be aimed at Laminate wood floors and can weaken lacquered surfaces.
  • To avoid staining the floor always make sure the floor is vacuum cleaned. Before damp cleaning.
  • Do not over clean your lacquered wood flooring, routine wet cleaning should be no more than once a week.
  • When using a mop make sure it is well wrung.
  • There should be no standing water or cleaning solution left on the floor.

Deep Cleaning

If your floor requires a heavy clean then use a pH balanced floor soap mixed with a bucket of luke warm water and working with the grain where possible, apply with a well wrung mop or cloth. Use a second bucket for rinse water and change regularly to staining the floor with dirt. Avoid saturating the floor. Leave to dry before general use.

Maintenance For Lacquered Floors

Floor Polishing
In high traffic areas and areas prone to spills and outside footwear polish can be applied periodically to enhance the surface and give extra protection

We recommend Bona Wood Floor Polish which restores the shine to your wood floors, while offering protection against wear. The durable, urethane acrylic blend adds a high-gloss protective layer and fills in micro-scratches, improving the appearance of your floor. Use every 1-4 months, depending on traffic, to keep your floors revitalised and looking new.

Important Note: Always test floors for adhesion and desired results before use. Safe for all unwaxed, polyurethane finished wood floors. Do not use on waxed or oiled floors.

Scratches & Repair

Most scratches will not penetrate through the tough lacquer coats to bare wood, thus maintaining durability. A refresher or polish can be applied to fill in and smooth minor scratches, whilst spot repairs are best carried out by floor finishing professionals with experience in sanding and lacquer application.

Long Term Maintenance

Most lacquered floors can be sanded and resealed and completely resurfaced. Existing lacquer is lightly sanded (keyed) and new coats of lacquer are applied. If floors are fully bonded to the subfloor, a more even sanding can be achieved so that very little surface is removed allowing for multiple resurfacing.

Please check that your floor is suitable for Sanding before work is carried out. This is usually a job best carried out by an experience floor finisher.
